Press release: Danish Government launches new growth team for the future agriculture, food, and biosolutions

Alliance for Biosolutions applauses the Danish Government's decision to launching a

new growth team for the future of agriculture, food, and biosolutions. The growth team

is an important first step towards a national growth strategy for biosolutions —

a longstanding goal the alliance has pursued since 2020.

“Denmark has all the prerequisites to create a globally leading super-sector. But to

succeed, it is crucial to improve the framework conditions so that companies and the

brightest minds remain in Europe. On behalf of the biosolutions sector, I want to thank

the Danish government for listening and being ambitious on behalf of Denmark, the EU,

and the green transition. As chairman of the alliance, I couldn’t be prouder,” says

Henrik Busch-Larsen, Chairman of the Alliance for Biosolutions, calling the new growth

team “a significant milestone for the biosolutions sector in Denmark.”

The potential of the biosolutions sector is enormous. According to a report by

Copenhagen Economics for the Alliance for Biosolutions (2022), eight of the most

mature biosolutions globally could reduce 4.3 billion tons of CO₂e by 2030, with

alternative protein sources to animal production accounting for more than one-third of

that reduction.

Overall, with the biosolutions we already know today, we could reduce global

emissions by 8%, or roughly 100 times Denmark’s current CO₂e emissions. The

potential for 2040 and 2050 is expected to be even bigger.

In June 2024, the Danish “Climate Partnership for Life Science and Biotech

recommended that the Government establishes an expert committee to advise on a

national growth plan for the biosolutions sector — a plan that should also pave the way

for better framework conditions in the EU for biosolutions.

“The new growth team is a major victory for the entire Danish biosolutions ecosystem

and a strong recognition by the Danish Government that the sector can provide many of

the solutions when it comes to job creation, EU competitiveness, and green transition

— particularly in agriculture and food. Denmark has all the prerequisites to take a

leading role in biosolutions. But to unlock the sector's vast potential, we must support

companies and researchers. That means removing some of the obstacles they currently

face and ensuring the right framework conditions to allow the sector to thrive. And that

is what a national strategy should help accomplish,” says Anne Lerche, Managing

Director for the Alliance for Biosolutions.
