A new mapping from the Danish Business Authority provides an updated overview of Denmark’s test, demonstration and development (TDU) facilities within biosolutions, offering insight into the country’s technological foundation and future infrastructure needs.
The mapping identifies 14 facilities covering key technologies such as precision fermentation, green biorefining, CO₂-to-protein and microalgae. The facilities are primarily anchored at universities, research institutions and GTS institutes, along with a limited number of private actors. The facilities are distributed across most parts of Denmark, with some concentration in the Greater Copenhagen area and Zealand.
The analysis demonstrates that Denmark has established a solid base for early-stage technology development. Many of the identified facilities operate at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 2-5, supporting research, testing and proof-of-concept activities. This reflects a strong scientific foundation and an ecosystem that continues to mature across multiple biosolutions domains.
At the same time, the mapping points to a more limited availability of pilot-, demonstration- and industrial-scale capacity (TRL 4-6 and 6-9). Several stakeholders highlight the importance of expanding larger-scale facilities, in the range of 10,000-50,000 litres and above, to strengthen commercialization pathways and ensure that production and value creation remain in Denmark.
The report also identifies structural barriers for startups and SMEs, including pricing levels, co-financing requirements and constrained access to large-scale infrastructure.
Overall, the mapping contributes to a clearer understanding of Denmark’s biosolutions infrastructure landscape. By strengthening transparency and identifying both existing capacities and development needs, the mapping provides a basis for continued dialogue on how to further develop the ecosystem and support long-term competitiveness in biosolutions.
